From Daniela Monk, Facilities Committee
On Friday, 22 May, our Architect, Jerry Brotnov, offered a second showing of the Brown’s facility to contractors. Currently, there are six (6) LOCAL general contractors that have received architectural plans, unknown number of general contractors have accessed electronic versions through the planning centers, and at least ten sub-contractors (electrical, plumbing, etc.) have contacted Brotnov Architecture for information. All seem to be solid prospects! The bid date has been moved to the 2nd of June, because we had to add an addendum to clarify the lighting. (On Monday, 25 May, Jerry traced power and lighting circuits to document existing conditions.)
The contractor’s bids will be received and opened by Jerry and his team and the ‘apparent low bid’ will be e-mail to us. Jerry will help us evaluate the various bids. By June 1 the front building will need to be cleared out. Nils has organized a 'clean-out party' for this coming week-end.
Once remodeling starts we will need VOLUNTEERS for (1) separating of materials, (2) painting inside walls (time and date determined by contractor), and (3) sorting recyclable versus non-recyclables waste/surplus.

MOSCOW - It's more than just an education. It's an adventure.
At least that's the idea behind a new charter school set to open in Moscow next fall.
The Palouse Prairie School will be what's called an Expeditionary Learning school. Last Saturday, the new public school held an open house at what will be their home on south Main...formerly Brown's Furniture.
" We're just thrilled about the light and the quality of this space and think it's going to make a wonderful school, said Palouse Prairie School Board Chairperson Nils Peterson.
For him, when the new K through 5 public school opens in the fall, it will be the realization of a dream he and others have worked on for over three years.

Seventy-three local students have secured slots at a new charter school that will open in Moscow this fall, while two Moscow teachers could find themselves without jobs next school.
Palouse Prairie Charter School officials announced Saturday they'd filled 73 of the available 87 seats through a lottery process. The rest of the seats will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Nils Peterson, chairman of the Palouse Prairie board of directors, said all but six of the students live within the Moscow School District.
Moscow School District officials have predicted the district will need to cut two teachers for next year to cope with the decreased enrollment.
"This is on top of the state reduction," Superintendent Candis Donicht said today.

The core philosophy of Palouse Prairie School is grounded in the belief that a highly challenging curriculum in a safe environment creates the setting for accelerated learning. Palouse Prairie School’ is an Expeditionary Learning School (ELS) and implements an educational philosophy that learning occurs best when:
• learners construct meaning;
• learners see the connection between what they learn and the real world;
• learners are actively engaged in purposeful tasks;
• activities are integrated and meaningful;
• learners work individually and as members of a group;
• learners are expected and encouraged to learn;
• learners internalize that what they learn and what they do in school can make a positive change in the community;
• support is an intrinsic part of the educational program;
• all learners have challenging learning opportunities;
• learners are actively involved in their community and find ways to serve the community
We draw not only on time-honored practices, but also on research that supports sound educational practices. Moreover, we place strong emphasis on the relationship between the school and the home, recognizing the critical role of parents and legal guardians in fostering children’s education. |
